Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges have been used to replace missing teeth and support damaged teeth for decades. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over a broken tooth, or over a decayed tooth once the decayed portions have been removed. They can also restore a dental implant; affixed to the top of an implant post, the crown serves as the artificial tooth to the implant’s artificial root. Dental bridges consist of replacement teeth held in place by either two adjacent crowns or a dental implant. Besides enhancing the appearance of your smile, having a dental crown or bridge can help you restore balance in your jaw and prevent adjacent teeth from drifting out of alignment.

The Single-visit Crown and Bridge Procedure

The process of receiving your bridge or crown begins with a dental examination and preparation of the teeth. Depending upon your needs, this may involve the removal of decayed or weakened portions of your tooth. Additional tooth structure may require removal in order to accommodate a dental crown. Next, a special camera will take an optical impression of your teeth, which will be used to guide the CEREC machine as it mills your bridge or crown from a block of ceramic whose color matches your existing teeth. About 30 minutes later, your new crown or bridge will be ready for placement. Crowns are placed on top of treated teeth, and are held in place with strong dental cement. They can also be attached to the top of implant posts. Your dentist may make slight adjustments to the crown or bridge to achieve proper balance in your bite.

The Ceramic Advantage

In addition to being able to receive your new crown or bridge in a single visit, you will be able to enjoy a strong, long-lasting dental prosthetic that matches the composition of your natural teeth more closely than metal and other materials, which are often used. As such, when you eat hot food or drink cold liquids, the restoration and your existing teeth will contract and expand at nearly equal rates, reducing the restoration’s chances of fracturing.

Lifespan of a Crown or Bridge

Crowns and bridges are classic, comfortable solutions for your damaged or missing teeth, but it is important to understand that they are not considered permanent. On average, you can expect your restoration to last five to 15 years, depending upon the wear and tear it endures, and the quality of care you take in maintaining your oral health. To ensure the best possible results from your restoration, you should avoid using it to chew overly sticky foods, and avoid habits such as chewing pen caps, fingernails, and ice. When flossing near the restoration, it is important to pull floss from front to back instead of moving floss up and down, which can result in floss becoming caught below the restoration and dislodging it from its foundation.
